City Centre

Motijheel — 2013 · Dhaka

City Centre Dhaka is one of the most prominent commercial skyscrapers in Bangladesh and reflects the country’s shift toward modern high-rise development. Located in Motijheel, the traditional business district of Dhaka, the project was undertaken to meet the increasing demand for premium office space in a rapidly growing urban economy. The construction of City Centre Dhaka began on 21 September 2004 under the development of Orion Group. At the time, Dhaka was experiencing rapid commercial expansion, and land scarcity in central areas encouraged vertical construction. The project was ambitious in both scale and engineering, aiming to introduce international-standard office facilities in the city. The construction phase lasted nearly eight years (2004–2012). This extended timeline was influenced by factors such as complex foundation work, high-rise structural requirements, and the logistical challenges of building in a densely populated area like Motijheel. The building eventually reached its full height (topped out) in 2012, marking a significant milestone in Bangladesh’s construction sector. City Centre Dhaka was officially completed on 31 December 2012 and later inaugurated on 14 April 2013, coinciding with the Bengali New Year, Pohela Boishakh. The choice of opening date added cultural significance to the project, symbolizing a new era of urban and economic development. After completion, the building quickly gained recognition as the tallest building in Bangladesh at the time, standing approximately 171 meters tall. It became a symbol of modern Dhaka, showcasing advancements in engineering, safety standards, and commercial infrastructure within the country. In a broader context, City Centre Dhaka represents a turning point in the architectural evolution of Dhaka. It highlights the city’s transition from low-rise structures to a dense skyline shaped by high-rise buildings, driven by economic growth, urbanization, and increasing demand for modern business facilities.
